How Chelsea Paints Hair by pom-happy-my-dog How Chelsea Paints Hair by pom-happy-my-dog
This tutorial was made using Gimp 2.0 and the Bamboo Fun tablet.

I'm going to add a few things below here since everything can't be fit in the Tutorial above.

Brush Size:
Painting Mane: Circle Hard Brush (17) Sizes 0.01-0.10

Blending:
Tool: Smudge Tool
Brush: Circle Fuzzy (you can choose any circle fuzzy brush) the size of the brush depends on where you are blending but don't make the brush size huge.
Smudge/Blend Rate: Keep it below 30.0 I find that high 20.0's is the best rate.

The Layers:
My layers go like this:
The last layer is my first layer (I created this layer first) and the top layer is the last layer I created.

o6. Lines-Mane
o5. Highlights-Mane
o4. Mane
o3. Base Color-Mane
o2. Lines-Horse
o1. Color-Horse
o0. Background

A Message from Me:
I finally made a tutorial on how I paint horse manes and tails. I use the same method for both. This is sort of my "secret" so if you use it in any of your work credit the tutorial with a link saying this:
Horse Hair Tutorial by ~BetterThanOkayCorral
With that said, if you need any help further explanation or anything else don't be shy and go ahead and ask me.

Ah I wish so many tutorials weren't used with tablets. I don't have one and my manes ALWAYS come out different because I don't have the preciceness of a pen, just a mouse.

Well I cannot help you there; I can't do digital art without a tablet. I'm without one now and it's shitty so all my work has to be done traditional since my bamboo fun tab broke.

lol your not the first to be surprised that I don't have a tablet. Trust me, if I had a tablet, you would see a lot more art from me. It takes so long with a mouse and I get frustrated easily.

I can't even imagine. I didn't bother with Gimp when I didn't have a tablet. I actually never knew how digital art was made or what tablets even were XD

I did used to say that when I look at other people's horsey hair. I don't do that quite as much anymore. XD
It's taken me lots of practice.

Then either make your canvas bigger or choose a smaller hard brush.
